Deputies believed that Brown resided in apartment 114 at the apartment complex, and although a motorcycle, which Brown later fled on, was found parked in front of that apartment, it was not Brown’s apartment.
The question of whether the deputies did or did not identify themselves as police is still in question, although there are reports that the officer who fired the shot that killed Scott was wearing a black vest that had sheriff on the front. But that does not explain why deputies would not identify themselves. Isn’t this standard procedure? Do not they cover this at the academy?
Another confusing fact is the report that Scott answered the door with a gun in hand. Why on earth would he answer the door armed? And once the deputies saw the armed man, did he give an imminent indication that he was about to shoot? Aren’t officers trained to deal with situations where they have a gun pointed at them? How about shoot to disarm, particularly when the person has not actually fired their weapon?
Police want the community to believe they adhere to the words imprinted on their badge, “To protect and serve”, but the question the community has for law enforcement is this; who is being protected? Who is being served?
